Résumé
Earthquake forecasting: Sorting of space-time-magnitude
volumes
From success of the 1975 HaichengM7.3 earthquake prediction
in China, to failure of Parkfield experiment in California
(1985-1993), the scientific community ispuzzled trying to
achieve some progress in predicting upcoming quakes.Such
efforts are facing serious problems linked to the complexity
of the physical mechanisms responsible of earthquake
rupture.Nowadays, quite objective approaches to earthquake
forecasting are available and being tested prospectively.
Typical examples are worldwide earthquake forecasts
available based on regular updates. This presentation
focuses on the introduction of basic principles of
earthquake forecasting from ideas and philosophy to testing
and evaluation, with a brief discussion of today challenges
and tomorrow expectations.
